EARLY TERMINATION

In Map 4B, we consider our options when we are unable to continue working with the patient.

If the patient will consider going to a self-help group, you can encourage that decision and make a referral [Section 16].Whatever the patient decides to do, there are still other treatment options (Section 44).

If you have a relationship with the patient’s partner or dependent, you can continue working with him or her [Section 36]. The rest of the patient’s family may also want to continue [Section 22].

Otherwise, you may need simply to terminate working with the patient [Section 28]; if others are assuming that he/she is still in therapy, you may feel an obligation to tell them that their assumption is wrong [Section 26].

At some point, the patient may wish to resume working with you. If that happens, you may need to return to the diagnostic process of Map 1B, to decide where to pick up the work.
