Roughly speaking, they can be called direct behavioral approaches, cognitive approaches, and psychodynamic therapies. The distinctions are addressed in <a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1661\/#anxietymap6\">Section 25<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Each broad approach constitutes an entire family of therapies. Although the labels are succinct, there are many varieties of treatments within each family.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1663\/#anxietymap6\">Section 26<\/a> discusses choices among several calming techniques, designed to focus directly on the experience of anxiety. They include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breath training [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1685\/#anxietymap6\">Section 37<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Relaxation [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1673\/#anxietymap6\">Section 31<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Autogenic training [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1675\/#anxietymap6\">Section 32<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Meditation [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1681\/#anxietymap6\">Section 35<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Biofeedback [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1689\/#anxietymap6\">Section 39<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three other calming approaches are shown on the map but not yet elaborated on with text.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1665\/#anxietymap6\">Section 27<\/a> discusses choices among three techniques in which the patient is exposed directly to the anxiety-producing object, situation or thought, for the purpose of extinguishing the automatic anxiety reaction. They include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Systematic desensitization [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1677\/#anxietymap6\">Section 33<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Ericksonian Visualization [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1683\/#anxietymap6\">Section 36<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Flooding [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1679\/#anxietymap6\">Section 34<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are also hybrid therapies, and many therapists work in their own unique styles. Take this representation not as definitive but suggestive.<\/p>\n<p>The map suggests an ordering to treatment approaches in working with anxiety issues &#8211; going from the most direct and immediate to more complex approaches as needed. If a patient can manage his\/her anxiety effectively using relaxation techniques, is cognitive or psychodynamic therapy necessary? Maybe, maybe not. The question needs answering. The answer must come from the patient and therapist. <a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1693\/#anxietymap6\">Section 41<\/a> asks if the patient is satisfied with direct work. If so, the next step could be termination.<\/p>\n<p>The map also offers the possibility of by-passing direct symptom reduction and starting with cognitive-behavioral work [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1669\/#anxietymap6\">Section 29<\/a>]. Here again, if the patient is satisfied, treatment may be finished.<\/p>\n<p>There are different paths to the use of psychodynamic therapy [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1667\/#anxietymap6\">Section 28<\/a>], depending on the patient&#8217;s needs and the therapist&#8217;s judgment of possible effectiveness of various approaches.<\/p>\n<p>There can also be a mixing of techniques. The map suggests that adjunctive techniques [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1671\/#anxietymap6\">Section 30<\/a>] may be appropriate with either cognitive therapy [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1669\/#anxietymap6\">Section 29<\/a>] or psychodynamic therapy [<a title=\"Anxiety and Panic Map 6\" href=\"https:\/\/treatmentmaps.net\/?page_id=1667\/#anxietymap6\">Section 28<\/a>], but the details must always be left to you. How you might, for example, introduce systematic relaxation into psychoanalytic therapy of a particular patient is for you to determine.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the patient&#8217;s anxiety is relieved, however, there may be other issues that need addressing.
