26. END FIRST SESSION

Several tasks should be planned for the last few minutes of the first session. These include:
Wrap Up the Session

  1. Summarize the session, what you have learned about the patient, where the work appears to be going at the moment
  2. Indicate the tentative nature of your summary, how additional information must be gathered and evaluated
  3. Say something about your style and methods for continuing, and whether the session reflects your usual way of operating, and what the person can expect in future sessions

Get the person’s reaction to the session

  1. Is this what he/she expected, and if not, how did it differ from that? Something additional may need saying on your part at this point.
  2. Is he/she comfortable with you? Will he/she feel comfortable returning?

Verify that you have a plan for continuing, which includes

  1. that you have enough information to determine insurance coverage, if any
  2. that you have releases to contact others about the person, as needed
  3. time of next session. It should be in your calendar, and the patient may need an appointment slip
  4. a review of any homework you may want the person to carry out by the next session.
